Here's what's happenin' around town:
Please note, because of expected heavy rain in San Diego, the Sizdahbedar Festival has been canceled, and the Holi Festival at Westview Park has been postponed until April 6. It looks like it might be a very wet weekend, so stay dry and warm!
Friday (today), at the Himalayan Grill, you can have lunch with author Shilpi Somaya Gowda where she will discuss her new book, A Great Country. The El Cortito Book Talk at Centro Cultural de la Raza will center around the struggle for the health and legal protection of farm workers. The film The Last Tlatoani will be screened at the WorldBeat Center. The New Children's Museum will present a concert with Mexican folk artist Sonia De Los Santos. The Scripps Ranch Theatre will begin performances of Stew. Performances will continue until April 21. Ellis Rodriguez will perform stand-up at Mic Drop Comedy. At La Sinaloense Bar and Grille, the Primavera Fest will feature several bands performing regional Mexican music, Banda music, and Norteño music. Azucar at Spin Nightclub promises to be "a vibrant and immersive cultural experience celebrating the rich and diverse mix of African and Latin music." Mariah Angeliq, who blends reggaeton, R&B, and Latin trap in her music, will be at Candy Shop Night Club.
Sunday, at the WorldBeat Cultural Center, there will be a Folk Dance of Colombia Workshop. As noted above, the Sizdahbedar Festival in Liberty Station has been canceled because of expected heavy rain.
Tuesday, Iranian-American comedian Max Amini will perform at the Balboa Theatre.
Next Thursday, the 4-day WOW Festival at the La Jolla Playhouse gets underway. Warwick's will host Piper Huguley online as she discusses her new book, American Daughters. There will be a Holocaust Living History Workshop featuring Bob Gans at the UCSD Geisel Library.
Next Friday and Saturday, comedian Eric D’Alessandro will perform at Mic Drop Comedy.
Next Friday, performances for Anastasia: The Musical will begin at California Center for the Arts. The play The 39 Steps will open at New Village Arts in Carlsbad. At the JCC, there will be a dinner talk with the wonderful Kitty Morse, who will share some recipes and talk about her book, Bitter Sweet: A Wartime Journal and Heirloom Recipes from Occupied France. Nepalese singer Ram Krishna Dhakal will perform at the Dancing Yak Nepali Cuisine restaurant.
Next Saturday and Sunday, there will be a Tequila & Taco Music Festival at the Snapdragon Stadium (where Qualcomm Stadium used to be). Also, next Saturday and Sunday, Magdalene the Musical will be performed at STAR Repertory Theatre in Escondido.
Next Saturday, the House of Scotland will hold their annual Tartan Day. The UTSHOB Holi Festival (previously scheduled for 3/30) will be held at Westview Park. At UCSD's School of Arts and Humanities, the film Rally will be shown. The Cooper Family Foundation will hold a Gospel Extravaganza on 70th Street. At the Hole in the Wall, Forró Touch will perform Forró music for dancing. Taiko group Drum Tao will perform at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. At the California Center of the Arts, there will be a dance performance of Soatsintle - Her Eyes, Her Story. Community Choirs from Tijuana & San Diego will perform at The Forum in the East Village. The Quartyard will hold a 9th Year Anniversary Party featuring music by Miguel Migs and Mitchum Yacoub.
Next Sunday, there will be a Gudhipadwa Celebration (Spring Celebration) at Mesa Verde Middle School. At the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński will perform with the chamber orchestra Il Pomo d’Oro. At the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, the 10th Annual Mariachi Festival will feature Mariachi Los Camperos, Tierra Caliente Academy & LuMaya. Earl Thomas and the Gospel Ambassadors will perform at UC San Diego Park and Market. Legendary Mexican singer-songwriter Gabino Palomares will perform at Centro Cultural de la Raza. At the Angelika Film Center, the documentary Fioretta will be screened with a Q&A to be held afterward.
Local theatrical productions include Molière's Tartuffe at North Coast Rep, Ride at the Old Globe, Stew at Scripps Ranch Theatre, Midsummer Night's Dream at the Coronado Playhouse, Anastasia: The Musical at California Center for the Arts, and The 39 Steps at New Village Arts in Carlsbad.
